SPOOK: Welcome!
Sheffield University Orienteering Club and SPOOK are two of the most celebrated and top performing orienteering clubs in the UK. Based in Sheffield, they have the Peak District for inspirational training and some of the best facilities and group sessions for orienteering.
Sheffield University Orienteering Club is also known or abbreviated by the name ShUOC.
The club has been around around since 1968 and will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2008.
In that time it has been very successful, for instance in 2005 they won the BUSA Orienteering Championships, were British Relay Champions and also won the UK Relay League.
Upon leaving university, graduates then become a member of the ex-ShUOC club known as SPOOK (Sheffield Postgraduates Occasional Orienteering Klubb). The K at the end of SPOOK stands for Klubb (with 2 b's), which is actually translated from the Swedish for 'Club', as the sport of Orienteering descended from the Nordic countries and Scandanavia.
SPOOK also includes ex-members of SCPOC and
SHUSO (Sheffield City Polytechnic OC and Sheffield Hallam University
Student Orienteers). Neither of those two clubs exist presently, but
their past members are still around and probably orienteering somewhere on the globe!
Some people prefer "old" instead of "occasional" but the definitive abbreviation is lost in the mists of time along with talk of the fastest yard time, service to Freshers awards and the ever famous SPOOK beer race team.
SPOOK will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2008.
